If you’re taking a leisurely drive in a private car, about 4 hours out of Shangri-La is the second largest monastery in the area, Dong Zhu Lin. Built in 1667 and rebuilt in 1985 the 500 Yellow Hat Sect monks live within view of beautiful mountains and valleys. The temple has a hostel/hotel right near by for guests. August 28th and 29th of the Chinese Lunar calendar are special celebration days.
