Villages, Towns & Cities

To the left is a complete list of all the villages, towns and cities on our website. There are a number of ways to research your trip using locations, activities or attractions to help plan your time in Yunnan. Five to six days is the bare minimum if you want to see the three most visited places in Yunnan, Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. With nine days you can add in Shrangri-la and with 12 days perhaps even see Deqin and Yubeng.
If you use our Region pages or home page map to see what is available within a specific geographic you may be able to minimize travel time or route yourself more efficiently. If you are time constrained, the Central and Northwest regions contain many of the most popular places and dramatic mountain scenery. To get from place to place by bus, car or train usually involves 3-7 hours of travel time. If you decide to fly for the sake of efficiency, for instance taking a flight from Kunming to Shangri-la and working your way back to Kunming through Dali and Lijiang, you will save you some wear and tear and be able to take in more of Yunnan’s attractions.Though you do miss some of the local flavor at 35,000 feet.
The Festivals and Holidays page located on the home page allows you to see if your dates match up with any of the many celebrations or festivals going on across Yunnan while you are in China. The Water Festival in Jinghong/Xishaaungbanna and the Torch Festivals are definitely worth trying to include in your itinerary. Make sure to take note when “Lunar Calendar” is mentioned as those dates are at variance with your Day-planners calendar.
For major destinations such as Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-la and Jinghong/Xishaungbanna we’ve included a Trip Planning Tools page. Unlike many travel sites or guide books that give you 40 hotels and 20 restaurants to choose from, we provide a half dozen of each which we have personally chosen based on our first hand experiences with them.
If your interested in a specific activity or attraction like hiking or hot springs, click on the categories on the right side of the home page which will give you an overview of what is available in the region and links to those specific locations.
For golfers see our Golf in Yunnan link on the home page which may surprise you with its varied number of world-class courses throughout the Central and Northwest Regions.
For an overview of money, visa, telecommunication and other issues applicable to Yunnan and China overall see our Yunnan General Information link on the home page.
As suggested in the introduction “DON’T MISS YUNNAN”! China is a long way to come from almost everywhere and if all you see is the Forbidden City and Shanghai’s skyline….well as the saying goes…”you ain’t seen nothing yet”.
