Situated on a plateau in northwestern Yunnan, Lijiangs natural beauty, 1,000-year old bridges, swift canals, cobbled streets, red lanterns and weeping willows form the center of Naxi people and culture. In addition to the Naxi, the population of 320,000 is made up of Bai, Lisu, Pumi, Yi, Tibetan, Miao, Hui, Han and other ethnic groups, with the Naxi making up 57% of the total. Somewhat like Dali, Lijiang has two separate and distinct faces. Lion Hill separates 35-year-old New Lijiang, a city made up primarily of Han people and indistinguishable from most modern Chinese cities from Old Lijiang whose intimacy and charm will keep you captivated for your stay.
Old Lijiang sits at the foot of the Yulong Snow Mountain. Tree-covered mountains on all sides surround the town with water running through small canals on many streets. Concert halls fill the evenings with wonderful entertainment and along with non-stop music, partying and a festive bar scene make for an environment more reminiscent of Amsterdam (seriously) than an isolated city in Western China.
