Yunnan Golf- Spring City Golf & Lake Resort

Spring City Golf and Lake Resort is located 22 miles outside of Kunming, generally about a 45-minute ride. The 10-year-old resort has two, 72 par championship courses, the Mountain Course designed by Jack Nicklaus (7,453 yards) and the Lake Course (the most popular) by Robert Trent Jones Jr (7,204 yards). The resort portion is composed of luxury villas with excellent views of the golf course, mountains and Yang Zong lake, a spa, two restaurants, bar, tennis courts and small gym.
Spring City has won a host of awards including; the US Golf Digest “No. 1 Golf Course in China and Hong Kong”, “ and “The Best 100 Courses Outside the U.S.” for both of their Jack Nicklaus and the Robert Trent Jones Jr. courses. Asian Golf Monthly awarded Spring City the ”No. 1 Golf Course in China” “No. 1 Golf Course in Asia” and the “Best Golf Resort in Asia” for 2007. China Golf awarded Spring City the “Best Mountain Course” for 2007. Framed by beautiful native pines and rock outcroppings, the natural beauty surrounds you everywhere as you play through their Signature Hole 8 and world famous Hole 18, voted one of the top 500 holes in the world by US Golf Magazine. Guests and golfers alike, rank Spring City as a true 5 star resort with challenging world-class courses, great caddies, fast greens and comfortable weather.
Though it’s easy and convenient to just drop in and play 18 holes with your own clubs or rentals from Spring City, the typical stay at is 3 days and 2 nights. Packages are available that include accommodations, golf and pickup at the airport. In addition to enjoying their world-class courses, you can hit some practice balls at their 295-yard natural terrain driving range, which has practice sand bunkers and target greens.
Accommodations include standard rooms in the Clubhouse area, which offer the benefit of proximity to the restaurants, spa and other facilities. Or there are the superb 1,2 and 3 bedroom Villas located a short distance away. Bedrooms have either King or Twin beds. Based on our recent visit to the course we would recommend the Azalea Villas. They have the most commanding bedroom and balcony views of the course and Yang Zong Lake and are the newest accommodations. Both Long distance telephone service and internet access are available in the Villas. The Magnolia Villas also have spectacular lake and course views but are a bit lower down. The Primrose Villas by the Clubhouse are attractively appointed but lack the panoramic views that the balconies of the Azalea and Magnolia Villas offer.
The Spring City Spa offers a wide variety of Thai, Japanese and Chinese foot massage and other treatments at very reasonable prices. Wi-fi is available in the Clubhouse area. There is a Pro-shop and mini-mart on premises. Weather is generally mild all year round. For morning tee offs you will find Winter temperatures in the 45F – 50F range, Spring 55F – 65F and Summer 65F – 70F. Conference facilities with full A/V and catering are also available for groups or corporate meetings for up to 200. All major international credit cards are accepted.

The Mountain Course

Hole 1
This straightaway opening hole requires a fairly accurate tee shot to avoid a large bunker to the right and the steep rocky hillside on the left. Approaching this relatively flat large green, beware of the bunkers guarding both sides. Quite a difficult starting hole, mainly because it generally plays into the prevailing wind. Bogey isn’t a bad start! The beautiful panoramic lake view along the right side of this hole is only a picturesque start to more appealing scenery to come.

Hole 7
The tees here meander gracefully down the slope. You are forced to carry your tee shot over the lake, which crosses the entire width of the fairway. A good tee shot will leave a short iron approach to a severely contoured putting surface, heavily guarded by several deep bunkers. An inaccurately placed second will often end with three putts!

Hole 8
A relatively short Par 3 but the peninsula green surrounded by water and bunkers create a very intimidating tee shot, depending on the wind and pin positions. Especially interesting is the angle from our “Chairman’s Tee” located left and elevated. A very dramatic and picturesque hole that could produce many clubhouse conversations after the round.

Hole 17
This is the first of two demanding Par 4 finishing holes. The elevated tees give a good view of the numerous bunkers that meander throughout this entire hole. The bunkers coming across the middle both define the driving area and set the challenge. A drive directly over these opens up the green for an easier second. However, going left to avoid the bunkers makes your second shot proportionately longer and more difficult. With the prevailing wind in your face, par will be a very good score!

Hole 18
This is the longest and most demanding of all the Par 4’s. The drive must be well placed to miss the bunkers down the right. The second shot is probably the most difficult you will face on the course. The long iron or fairway wood shot must carry over the intimidating, deep native ravine that runs right across the hole, 10 yards short of the elevated green. The green is protected by two very deep bunkers on the right, whilst the rear is also guarded by sand. If in any doubt about  reaching in two, playing short of the ravine is the safe option. This, our signature hole, is directly under the 19th Hole Bar, so will provide a grandstand view of the finish for our guests.

The Lake Course
Sprawled alongside Lake Yang Zhong Hai, this course provides a stimulating and invigorating golfing experience. As the course steps down to the lake in a series of terraces and palisades, it is breathtaking and challenging at the same time. The Signature Hole 8, Par 3 is a classic – deceptively simple from the tee but the positioning is unforgiving and challenging.

Hole 4
This hole will play considerably shorter than it length. Played downwind and downhill, the player must accurately select the proper club. The green is large with ample room around it, but the pin can be placed in challenging positions requiring delicate chipping and putting.

Hole 8
Perhaps the most difficult club selection on the course! It plays severely downhill with the green 98 feet lower than the tee, bordered by water along the right and rear. The green is long and narrow and can easily play several clubs shorter depending on wind and pin positions. One can bailout left and short, but will then be faced with a difficult and delicate chip. The golfer has finally reached the lakeshore some 426 feet below the clubhouse, a shoreline that has been visible for the previous seven holes.

Hole 9
The golfer now turns into the wind and plays parallel to the lakeshore. This short but narrow Par 5 features water on the right and rugged cliffs on the left. The green can be reached in two, but water on the three sides will make this a risky option. The second shot must be played with precision as the golfer must properly judge distance and play with accuracy.

Hole 10
One of the most intimidating and exciting short holes on the course! It offers just enough mystery and excitement to make even the best players a bit nervous. The tee shot must be played to an elevated green, with only the sky for a backdrop. There is fairway short and left for those choosing to lay up, but a missed hit to the right will find the ball bouncing down the rocky Cliffside to the lake below.

Hole 15
A charming shorter Par 4 with plenty of challenge and abundant beauty. Another optional fairway allows the golfer to play left to the more open and wider landing area or play a long carry to the right to a higher and narrower fairway. The more difficult right side option will reward the player with an open approach playing level into the green. The approach from the lower left must carry a deep bunker guarding the front portions of the green.
